Obituary

Mr. Albert L. Edwards began life’s journey on October 18, 1935. He was the son of the late Elsie and Johnnie Edwards. As a child, he was an active member and usher of Oak Grove A.M.E. Church of West Green, Georgia. In 1959, he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Winnie Mae Grady. To that union four Children were born. Bro. Edwards and his family resided in Broxton GA, where he became a faithful member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church for more than forty years. He was a retired Teamster, employed by Carolina Fright/ABF Trucking Company for thirty-four years. After retirement he reentered the workforce as bus driver for approximately ten years.

Throughout his tenure as a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E Church, Bro. Edwards has worn many hats; from dishwasher, groundskeeper, cook to patching the roof. He was an active member of the Lay Organization. For many years, he served as a Sunday school teacher. He also served in the capacity of Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee and Stewart Pro-Tem. He was also a committed member of the One Hundred Men in Black organization.

Bro. Edwards exemplified unselfish, loyal and dedicated service and always lead by example. Often he reminded his family and church family by saying, “Don’t put the cart ahead of the horse.” He also was a devoted husband and beloved father for his children, as well as, to other children that came along his way. To many he was known as “Uncle Albert” and “PaPa”. He was a Beacon to whom lives he touched. As a devout Christian.

He was preceded in death by one son and one daughter, Guantto and Eve Edwards. Now he leaves his cherished memories to: his wife, Winnie Mae Edwards. Two children: Myrtice Edwards and Gayle (Carlos) Wilkerson. Three loving sisters: Gladys McElhaney, Ruby (Eddie) Washington, and Louise Jones. Two Brothers: George (Brenda) Edwards and Moses (Mary) Edwards. Three grandchildren Javenn Edwards, Erin (Ashley) Wilkerson and Breon Manley: Three great grandchildren: Ashyrah Wilkerson, Amir Wilkerson and Zion Manley. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family and friends. A very devoted great niece and nephew George and Evelyn Wilkerson, a great nephew Eric Wilkerson and God Son, Ashely Wilson.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2015 at Mt. Olive A.M.E. in Broxton, Georgia. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Young’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Douglas, Georgia. Obituary will be added later.
